The small island of Curacao played a key role in the world trade. The Historic Area of Willemstad represents the colonial trading and administrative settlement of the era. The island was established by the Dutch because of its geographic position in the southern Caribbean, near the tip of South America. Armed with a natural protective harbour they started with the construction of Fort Amsterdam in 1634.
Our easy walking tour will take you to the past and show you how the Historic Area of Willemstad was a colonial ensemble in the Caribbean, which illustrates the organic growth of a multicultural community over three centuries. We will share with you the stories behind the remarkable historic port town in the Caribbean in the period of the Dutch expansion with significant town planning and architectural qualities.
You will experience how the old is preserved and how we have evolved over time to be a rich mix of cultures. On the tour you will visit one of the oldest Bars on the island and if you are up to it try the famous organic green rum only available at this location. You will be mesmerized by the over 756 monumental preservations which is now listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. But most of all you will be delighted by fun and laughter throughout your tour.
